New take on storytelling

A NEW scheme to bring books to life is being launched in Lancaster next week.

The Living Libraries in Lancashire scheme gives visitors to the city's library the chance to 'borrow' living books.

The 'books' – who are actually volunteers from the district – will give borrowers a fascinating insight into their lives, sharing their inspirational stories, local history and cultural knowledge, career achievements or interesting jobs, life-changing experiences and unusual hobbies.

Each 'book' will have a short bibliography to make it easier for people to decide which one they want to 'borrow.'

People will be able to 'hire' the living books for 30 minutes a time by booking either beforehand or on the day.

On 'hire' in Lancaster will be:

n My Life and Times of Writing For Ken Dodd with Nygel Harrot

n Counting in Cantonese with Kim Leong

n Life in a Totalitarian Regime with Matt Egan

n Living with Valentina with Carla Scarano D'Antonio

n Cultural Intelligence with Amaan Siddiqui

n Flag Floors and Rag Rugs with Janet Rogan

n Something Back with Michael Gilbert

n Tales of East Lancashire with Ruby Parker

n Plumber? Bus driver? No, a writer from Poland – how moving to the UK made me a writer, with Joanna Skalska

Run by Lancashire County Council and supported by Unison, Living Libraries in Lancashire aims to encourage people to find out more about others from different backgrounds.

The event will be held in Lancaster library on Tuesday from 1.30pm until 6pm.
