New hope in fight to save loos
A DECISION which could see at least nine public toilets close as Lancaster City Council cuts costs has been 'called-in' for review.
Toilets at Bolton-le-Sands, Warton, Silverdale, Heysham Village, Hest Bank, Red Bank, Sunderland Point and Cockerham could close from next April.
Five councillors have referred the plans to a meeting of the council's overview and scrutiny committee on Monday evening, which could ask cabinet to reconsider its decision.
The council will offer parish councils half the running costs in return for keeping the toilets open, but the quintet fear parishes would be forced to raise their council tax to cover the remainder of the bill.
They say parishes have not been given any indication of the costs involved in repairing and maintaining the toilets, which they argue must be maintained if the council wishes to attract tourists to outlying areas.
