Morecambe and Lunesdale MP David Morris says he was left ‘shaken’ after a helicopter crashed near his flat in London.

Two people were killed when the helicopter smashed into a crane this morning, crashing into two cars as it hit the ground.

Mr Morris said: “My thoughts are with those directly involved with the incident involving a helicopter at Vauxhall Bridge this morning.

“I was reading my Science and Technology papers at around 8am when I heard a loud bang.

“Initially I was not aware of what happened, then it became apparent that a helicopter had crashed around 100 – 150 yards away from my flat in Vauxhall.

“This morning I am incredibly shaken.”

Witnesses said the aircraft cartwheeled out of the sky after hitting the crane on St George’s Wharf Tower, in Vauxhall, amid heavy fog.

It then exploded into flames.

London Fire Brigade said they had rescued a man from a burning car at the scene, although his condition is not known.

Rescue crews are searching the River Thames after reports that somebody was seen in the water after the crash.

Two people were taken to hospital.

Burning wreckage and aviation fuel covered the road and people have reported seeing cars on fire and hearing people scream.

Firefighters say the crane is now in a “precarious” position.

Witnesses said at least 22 fire engines were at the scene, as well as police and ambulances.
