Man rescued after trying to jump from bridge
EMERGENCY services prevented a man from jumping off Carlisle Bridge in Lancaster last night, Thursday.
A fire crew went out at 8.15pm following reports of a person sat on the bridge above the river.
When the first crew arrived, they quickly located the man sat on the wrong side of the railings, on top of one of the bridge parapets, directly over the centre of the River Lune.
While the police negotiated with the man, fire crews set up rescue pack equipment and a further crew was summoned to assist.
One firefighter was rigged in a harness and climbed down to the man. During this time, the police had to keep a firm hold on him to prevent him jumping from the bridge.
Following further negotiation, the man agreed to climb up and back over to the right side of the railings. He was assisted by the police and a firefighter in a safety harness.
Fire service swift water rescue personnel and the hovercraft crew were standing by during the operation.
