Man “critical but stable” after being hit by van

An elderly man hit by a van in Lancaster on Tuesday evening is in a “critical but stable condition” in hospital.

The 68-year-old was crossing Barton Road near to the junction with Wakefield Drive at around 4.50pm when he was hit by a white Mercedes Vito Van.

He was taken to Royal Preston Hospital where he is in a critical but stable condition receiving treatment for head, spine and leg injuries.

The driver of the van was uninjured.

Officers from the Road Policing Unit are appealing for any witnesses who have not yet contacted police to come forward.

A police motorcyclist, believed to be responding to the incident, was involved in a collision with a car in Dalton Square at around 5.05pm, bringing traffic to a standstill in the city centre.

He remains in the Royal Lancaster Infirmary with serious injuries.
