Man calls ambulance to take dog’s temperature

The North West Ambulance Service was inundated with calls over the festive period.

A man rang for an ambulance to take a dog’s temperature.

The caller, from the Morecambe area, called at 8pm on New Year’s Eve, one of the busiest nights for North West Ambulance Service.

A spokesperson for the NWAS said: “Obviously we declined to send an ambulance.”

North West Ambulance Service took 2,265 999 calls until 7am on New Year’s Day - about one every 10 seconds.

Nearly 550 of these were for serious incidents including assaults, firework injuries and road accidents.

The service said the figure was similar to last year but it was “disappointed” at the number of “inappropriate” calls.

Derek Cartwright, director of emergency services, said “All our staff worked very hard, both in control rooms managing emergency calls, deploying vehicles, and front-line crews tending to patients.

“We will continue to push the message about acting responsibly and the importance of keeping ambulances free to attend to those patients with a genuine medical need.”
