Man admits manslaughter of fizzy drinks salesman

A MORECAMBE man has pleaded guilty following the death of a father-of-two in the town last year.
Christopher Kearns, 40, of Marine Road East, Morecambe admitted the manslaughter of Paul Ormerod.
Mr Ormerod, 55, was punched in the face on Queen Street at around 1:15am on November 5 and fell to the floor.
Mr Ormerod, who worked as a fizzy pop delivery driver in Lancaster, was taken to Royal Preston Hospital where he remained in a critical condition until he passed away as a result of his injuries on November 14.
Mr Ormerod, who was widely known as ‘Pop Man Paul’, had been out for drinks with friends in Morecambe town centre on the night.
A self-employed father of two, Mr Ormerod delivered fizzy pop around the estates of Lancaster for about 30 years in his recognisable yellow and white vans.
He was the eldest of three children, with two brothers Gary and Kevin.
Mr Ormerod had a son Connor and daughter Lynn, and was devoted to his mum Joan, living with her on Williamson Road in Lancaster as her carer.
Detective Inspector Martin Clague said: “This is a particularly nasty and cowardly assault which has resulted in a man losing his life.
“I am glad that Kearns has entered a guilty plea today purely because it means Paul’s family will not have to sit through a trial and have to revisit all the details of the mindless assault that led to them losing Paul.”
Kearns will be sentenced on April 8.
