Landlady and son assaulted

A TORRISHOLME pub landlady was left with a broken wrist and her son with a broken nose following a vicious assault during the Manchester football derby.

During the televised game at around 8pm last Wednesday, staff at the George Hotel in Lancaster Road challenged two young men who did not have identification.

The youths left the pub, but returned 30 minutes later and refused to leave.

Landlady Wendy Mellish, 40, and her 17-year-old son tried to get the pair out of the pub but one of them punched Wendy in the face, knocking her to the floor. Her son came to her aid and was punched in the face a number of times by the two teenagers.

They then fled into the car park and got into a silver estate car, which was driven at Wendy, knocking her to the ground and breaking her wrist.

DC Tim Dodgson, from Morecambe CID, said: "This was a vicious and unnecessary assault on a landlady and her son, who was trying to protect his mother. The landlady is very lucky not to have more serious injuries, considering the fact she was actually struck by the vehicle."
