Incidents across district in icy conditions

EYE witness reports of accidents on the M6 between Carnforth and Galgate have this morning been pouring in to The Visitor.

Black ice is affecting roads, pavements and walkways across the Morecambe and Lancaster area.

Several people told The Visitor they saw a crash near Carnforth and there were reports of an accident near the motorway bridge at Slyne. Reports of crashes near junction 34 and junction 33 at Galgate have also been phoned in.

By midday today, the North West Ambulance Service said they had received nearly 700 emergency calls since 8am.

Police said there had been an accident on the M6 south bound at 6.30am. A spokesman said a car had crashed into the central reservation. The spokesman was had not yet received information about any other crashes.

He said: “We are experiencing difficulties on the M6 between junction 33 and junction 36 on both carriageways. This morning we have attended 10 damage only road traffic collisions. This is because of the weather conditions. Gritters are out in force.

“It is raining and the rain is turning into ice, however motorists still insist on driving too fast and not to the conditions.

“Our advice to motorists is to slow down and drive to the conditions. Only travel if you need to and beware of the ice on the road .”

A number of people have also been injured falling on black ice on pavements across the district.
