Ice age dawns at the Crook o’Lune

The River Lune would not have been out of place in the Arctic last week as rising temperatures caused “mini icebergs” to collide and stack up at the Crook o’ Lune – as our picture by photographer Garth Hamer shows.
As temperatures rose above freezing last Wednesday, the river began to thaw, causing the ice, in some places almost 12 inches thick, to break up and move down the river in huge blocks which piled up against each other where the current flowed more slowly.
Loud cracks and creaks could be heard as the ice broke up not far from the Crook o’ Lune bridge near Caton, creating an eerie atmosphere with the low white mist.
Brian Davison, from the meteorology centre at Lancaster University, said the event was unusual for a place so close to the coast.
