Housing plans are 'vandalism'

OPPOSITION is mounting against plans for a new housing development in Bolton-le-Sands.

Kendal-based Briery Homes has submitted outline plans to Lancaster City Council for 82 homes on agricultural land between Coastal Road and Lancaster Canal.

The three hectare site, situated between numbers 67 and 83 Coastal Road, would also include 164 car-parking spaces.

But residents in surrounding streets including Broadlands Drive, Cherry Tree Close, Fir Tree Close and Coastal Road have objected amid concerns including road safety, the density of the development, loss of views from the canal and the site's greenfield status.

The site is owned mainly by Morecambe Lodge House, in Shore Road, with a small part owned by a Coastal Road resident.

Keith Agar, of Broadlands Drive, submitted a letter to the city council complaining that the application was nothing more than 'vandalism'.

"This is a completely inappropriate development for this area," he said.

"It will place incredible strain on the village services. The primary school is already over subscribed. Traffic on the Coastal Road is very heavy for most of the day and the development of 82 dwellings on this site will make the situation much worse.

"This application is nothing more than vandalism of a beautiful area and environment."

The application will go before the city council's planning committee on a date still to be decided.

Keith Budden, chair of Bolton-le-Sands Parish Council and a member of the city council planning committee in his role as local ward councillor, said: "There have been a number of residents who have made contact concerned about the application and asking how to go about voicing their views at the planning meeting.

"I would advise people to writ e to Lancaster City Council to put forward their views."
