Lancaster and District Homeless Action Service was on the receiving end of fundraising by the Lancaster and Morecambe Lions Club.

Money raised for LDHAS has totalled £2,925 in the last four years, including this year’s cheque for £350.

LDHAS finance and administration officer Islay Watson invited Lions Club president Graham Haddington and past president Rosie Ryder to drop in on LDHAS’s Edward Street centre over Christmas.

The bulk of the Christmas period donation had come from the Lions Club’s Asda collection. In addition, donations of food made during the collection had been shared between LHDAS and Morecambe Foodbank.

Graham said: “It has become something of a tradition that where possible the proceeds of our December Asda collection is used to help local homeless people and others in need over the Christmas period.

“The Foodbank was collecting donations of food at the same time we were collecting money in Asda.

“While our primary aim was to collect cash donations, we were also given many donations of canned food for the homeless.

“The food needs of LDHAS and Foodbank differ in that LDHAS is essentially a group catering operation whereas Foodbank is dealing with needy families and individuals. For instance, individual cans of a variety of soups are unsuited to LDHAS, but welcomed by Foodbank so we passed any such donations over to Foodbank.”

Islay said: “The LHDAS centre simply could not exist without the ongoing and generous donations from Lions and many other local individuals and organisations.

“The Christmas night shelter is an important part of our work providing warm, dry accommodation for those who genuinely would otherwise be ‘roofless’.”
