Heysham soldier serves in Kabul

A soldier from Heysham is helping bring security to British bases in and around Kabul in Afghanistan.

Lance Corporal Anthony Wooley, 28, who normally works with communication systems in the Royal Signals has temporarily left behind his signalling work to patrol the streets of Kabul in an infantry role.

Anthony is undertaking his second tour of Kabul the first being in 2010, but this time he is a foot and vehicle patrol commander as he has been promoted to Lance Corporal.

He is now in charge of over 20 men patrolling the city and providing security for the many international bases and routes in and around the city. He said: “This time it’s a lot quieter than 2010. There are more Afghan security forces around, both police and Army.”

Anthony’s family still live in Heysham and his mum and dad, Sharon and John Wooley, enjoy a pint in the local pub.

Anthony said: “I’m looking forward to going for a pint with my dad in the Strawberry Gardens in Heysham. We know the owners, Maz and Trevor Ford….they owe me a pint.”

Anthony’s brother, David Wooley is also currently serving in Afghanistan, but David is located in Helmand Province in the south of the country.

Anthony returns to the UK in May when he is due a posting from his current Unit, 2 Signal Regiment, based in York. This is the last time 2 Signal Regiment will provide both tactical and operational communication systems to British Forces in southern Afghanistan and Kabul.

On return to York they will re-role.
