Graffiti blast at wall art

YOUNG people on the Ridge have defended an art project aimed a brightening up their estate after an angry resident claimed it had left the area looking like Manchester’s notorious Moss Side.

The scheme, organised by Ridge Community Centre, last week saw around 20 youngsters spray murals on to the centre walls and shop shutters in Ridge Square.

But the woman, who said she did not want to be named for fear of a backlash, dubbed the art as ‘graffiti’ and claimed local people had not been consulted.

She claimed many residents were unhappy and that she would be organising a petition in an attempt to get the paintings removed.

“It’s absolutely vile and makes the area look like the centre of Moss Side,” she said. “It has probably wiped a fair few thousand off the prices of houses in the immediate area.

“If the youths and locals want to get involved in regenerating the area then fine, let’s paint things properly and make the area more presentable, not graffiti everywhere and make it look like somewhere youths run wild.”

But Nathan Kerr, 20, who was involved in the project, said: “This criticism is a bit uncalled for. The square now looks 10 times better. We have an over-60s group who use the community centre and they were saying how colourful it looks.”

Paul Ireland, project coordinator at the centre, said: “We had a community consultation meeting last year and although there have been a few negatives the feedback since last week has been very good overall.”

I used to live on the Ridge Estate, it was a great place to grow up. Coming from a poor family it was great to have a decent place to live, but most people worked and paid for their cheap home themselves and respected where they live, they weren't all looking for free handouts just affordable decent housing. Hyacinth Bouquet has probably worked very hard on a low income and why should she be penalized for people defacing a great shop square where I had many a happy social gathering. Instead of having the time to deface public places get a job, if you can't get a job go gardening, sweep streets and pick up rubbish that will beautify the estate.

“It’s absolutely vile and makes the area look like the centre of Moss Side,” she said. “It has probably wiped a fair few thousand off the prices of houses in the immediate area." said one of the many residents who took advantage of the right to buy scheme, which has contributed to the nations housing shortage. Council houses were built and operated by local councils to supply uncrowded, well built homes on secure tenancies at below market rents to primarily working class people. Perhaps Lancaster City Council can buy back her property, at it's current reduced rate,as it could house a low income family in need of suitable accomodation. In the meantime Hyasinth Bucket could cut her losses, and further deprive the poorest people in the district, by registering for one of Penny's Almshouses.
