Famous faces in town

COMEDIAN Vic Reeves joined actress Victoria Wood in Morecambe this week to film a new BBC drama about the early career of Eric Morecambe.

The Shooting Stars presenter is the latest addition to the cast list of the 90-minute drama 'Morecambe and Wise' which was conceived by Victoria. He will play Eric's father George.

Both Vic and Victoria – who plays Eric's mother Sadie – were rumoured to be staying at the Midland Hotel.

BBC film crews arrived in the resort on Tuesday to film the drama, which will follow the stories of Eric and Ernie from their initial meeting when they were just 13 to their tours of the theatres on the children's entertainment circuit.

More than a dozen film crew trucks lined the shore in Morecambe and a huge circus marquee was erected at Hest Bank near Red Bank Farm as filming began.

"We are filming a scene when they worked in Lord Sanger's Circus after the war," explained producer Tim Bricknell.

"All the cast are here and we've been filming all week."

Filming was also due to take place at the Winter Gardens on Wednesday and Thursday.

"The Winter Gardens is going to stand in for the Glasgow Empire," Tim said.

"Everything else is being filmed in and around Morecambe, as well as some studio work in Manchester."

The show, made by BBC Wales Drama, is expected to be screened on BBC2 at Christmas.
