Two lorry drivers killed in a crash on the M6 on Monday have been named.

The driver of a SPAR lorry has been formally identified as Alan Walmsley, 62, of Mardale Road, Longridge, Preston.

The driver of a blue flat lorry has been formally identified as Michael Raymond Proctor, 22, of Salisbury Street, Southport.

The incident occurred around 8.15am on the northbound carriageway just after Burton services between Junction 35 and Junction 36.

More than 20 emergency service vehicles attended the scene. A woman from Lancaster, who was driving a dark coloured Peugeot 307, was seriously injured when her car became trapped between a yellow HGV and a red Volvo HGV. Her injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

Other vehicles involved included a white Mercedes flatbed HGV driven by a 29-year-old man from the Lancaster area who was uninjured, a silver Renault Traffic van driven by a man who was taken to Preston Royal Infirmary by air ambulance and a silver Volkswagen Golf which suffered damage from the debris of the collision.

The occupant was uninjured.

All casualties were taken to hospital via land or air ambulance.

Following resurfacing work, the Highways Agency said the carriageway was expected to be fully open today, Tuesday.
