Doctor Who fan sets up stall in Market

A DOCTOR Who enthusiast has set up stall in Lancaster market with his collection of rare memorabilia from the cult TV show.

Peter Jewell owns everything a Doctor Who fan of any age could possibly want, from books, comics and posters to dalek toys and helium balloons.

The real-life doctor - Peter has a PhD in ecology - opened the stall to coincide with an exhibition of some of his memorabilia in the Judge's Lodgings.

The display, which will be in the museum until October, includes artefacts dating back to the 1930s such as a theatre programme from what is thought to be the first professional performance of Doctor Who.

Peter, 46, has been obsessed with Doctor Who since the age of six.

"I was ill with mumps and my mum bought me a Doctor Who book and that was it," he said.

"I started collecting things when I was ten or 11; it started from there and it's never let me go.

"I grew up with it really - it's a show that people of all ages can enjoy because it works on so many different levels.

"Some of the themes have become more adult, and there's even a bit of political comment in it now."

Peter, who is originally from Windermere but now living in Lancaster, estimates his complete collection is now worth about 750,000.

His most valuable item is the very first Doctor Who comic from 1978, which is worth 20,000 - and he owns six of them!

He is now enjoying the opportunity to meet and chat with fellow enthusiasts in the Lancaster area.

"I suppose I am lucky because a lifelong passion has become a job," he said. "I think specialist stands are exactly what Lancaster market needs, because they attract a completely different type of person into the market.

"I quite like the fact that I have created a place for people to come and sit and talk about Doctor Who. I see people aged from two to 90 who all love the show.

"I would have loved to find like-minded people when I was younger."

Peter plans to keep his market stall at least until the end of October, when his exhibition in the Judge's Lodgings closes.
