Schools were particularly supportive of the appeal.

Staff and pupils at Bowerham Primary and Nursery School raised 500 by selling cakes and biscuits and dressing up in silly outfits and during assembly the choir entertained parents with their own version of the Silly Red Nose Song.

Skerton High's theme for the day was red or pyjamas and 140 was raised.

At St Wilfrid's in Halton, the acting head had his hair shaved and dyed red while Skerton Primary School made strawberry cakes to raise money.

Many organisations and groups such as those at The Foyer in Morecambe also came up with innovative fundraising ideas and among the individuals doing their bit were Lancaster Guardian newspaper seller Colin Turkington who raised 93 by dressing up as Fred Flintstone.
