College fined £20,000 over Capernwray diver's death

A COLLEGE has been fined £20,000 following the death of a novice diver at Capernwray Diving Centre.

Peter Vause, 29, died during his first open water dive at Capernwray Diving and Leisure Centre near Carnforth, more than four years ago.

At Burnley Crown Court, Judge Peter Openshaw QC fined Blackpool and The Fylde College 20,000, its head of the nautical campus John Matthews 1,500 and college diving instructor Simon Weaver 500, for failures on the course Mr Vause had been on.

Mr Vause was pulled from the water after he got into difficulties with his air supply, during the dive at Capernwray quarry on February 8, 2001.

He was taken to the shoreline unconscious and not breathing and died the same day at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary.

In an earlier hearing, Weaver had been cleared of Mr Vause's manslaughter after the prosecution offered no evidence.

Weaver admitted he failed to give students proper instruction and familiarisation before their first open water dive.
