Bin amnesty may save cash

A BIN amnesty could be held by town hall chiefs in an effort to save cash and help avoid the introduction of charges for replacement bins and recycling boxes.

The idea was suggested by Green councillor Jon Barry after his cabinet colleagues agreed to delay bringing in charges to allow new efforts to be made to reduce the cost of replacements, which stood at £110,000 in 2011.

That amount covered the replacement of 4,470 bins, 4,332 boxes and 5,000 lids, with further costs being incurred by Lancaster City Council for administration, delivery and storage.

A report considered by the council’s cabinet this week revealed that some householders falsely claim they have lost their grey bin in order to receive an extra one and avoid putting materials in recycling boxes.

The council says others used their recycling box to store possessions.

Tom, do what a friend of mine in Darwen did. Use the spare ones to grow potatoes in!

It would help if they didn't waste them either. Week before last I rang asking for new lids as my recycling boxes came back without them after the binmen had been. What arrived was 3 new recycling boxes with lids. Now, I'm gointo ring to get them taken back, but I bet a lot of people wouldn't!
