Alternative rich list for charity founder

THE co-founder of Lancaster-based charity Stepping Stones Nigeria has been shortlisted for this year's 'Alternative Rich List'.

Gary Foxcroft was shorlisted from 150 people nominated by members of the public and a panel of experts to make the final 11 in the list which recognises people for how they have influenced others and made a difference to their lives.

Gary said he was "quite surprised and mildly embarrassed" to find out he had been nominated for the award, adding:

"It's been quite an epic journey so far and we have achieved a massive amount for a small charity like ours.

"It's not just me who deserves credit though, it is all our staff and volunteers in Nigeria and UK and also the people of Lancaster who helped so much during our early years."

Gary founded Stepping Stones Nigeria in 2005 with his wife Naomi in order to provide shelter, education, literacy, healthcare, food and hope to vulnerable children in the Niger Delta.

He also campaigns on behalf of children who are accused of witchcraft and subsequently abused. The shortlist includes people from mental health, disability, and international aid charities, and also Born Free actress Virginia McKenna.

The voting closes on September 17.
