A quarter of Wigan teenagers binge drink

Alarming figures show that more than one in four Wigan teenagers regularly binge on booze.

A survey carried out by local trading standards chiefs revealed that 26 per cent of local 14 to 17-year-olds regularly drink to excess.

A further 50 per cent of local youngsters told researchers they binge drink occasionally - up to three times a month.

The study also revealed that underage boozing in pubs and clubs is more prevalent in Wigan than drinking outside in parks and on the streets.

According to the figures, 18 per cent of Wigan youngsters drink twice a week or more and 28 per cent claim to buy their own booze.

Responses from the young people highlighted alcopops as teenagers' favourite tipples, with apple cider not far behind it.

Richard Lindley, chair of the Trading Standards North West under age sales strategy group, said: "It is worrying that the same products are highlighted year after year as being popular items to drink among young people.

"Whilst we can take enforcement action against the sellers, the firms behind the products have to think carefully about their marketing strategies."

The survey also showed that the use of fake IDs from the Internet has dropped from 42 per cent in 2007 to 32 per cent in 2009 – but half of the youngsters reported that they had never been asked for ID.

Dr Ruth Hussey, regional director of public health for the North West, said: "The amount of alcohol consumed by some teenagers is of great concern.

"Not only does it pose a significant threat to their health, it puts them at greater risk of violence and unplanned pregnancy."

Phil Woolas MP, regional minister for the North West, commented: "The 14-17 year olds who are regularly drinking far too much are at real risk of major health problems.

"We all need to be aware of the extent of the problem and help them tackle their drinking problems before it's too late."
