Whistleblowers’ hotline launched for NHS staff

A NEW “whistleblowers hotline” for NHS staff in the Lancaster district has been launched, receiving backing from Morecambe Bay NHS Trust.

Following on from the recent call from local and national MPs regarding the protection of NHS staff when raising concerns about poor patient care, University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust (UHMBT) has pledged its support to the same cause.

In October 2011, the Department of Health announced that it intends to amend the NHS Constitution to protect healthcare staff who raise concerns about poor patient care from early 2012.

On January 1, a national free helpline – 08000 724725 – for whistleblowers in the NHS and social services was also launched.

Roger Wilson, director of human resources and organisational development at UHMBT said the trust fully supported changes to the NHS Constitution to enable healthcare staff to be able to speak out and “blow the whistle” without fear of reprisal.
