British double leg amputee and Paralympic Gold medallist, Richard Whitehead, will be passing through Galgate as part of his run around Britain charity challenge.

Richard is running a marathon a day this summer from John O’Groats to Land’s End in order to raise money for Sarcoma UK and Scope.

The run started on August 13 and finishes around September 23 – by which time Richard will have covered a staggering 977 miles (1572km).

He is expected to pass through Galgate this Sunday, September 1.

Former Lancaster Girls Grammar School pupil Claire McIntyre will be running 10 x 10 kilometre stages through the North of Scotland and North West England, and cycling the Great Glen Way from Inverness to Fort William in aid of Scope, Sarcoma UK and Macmillan.

Claire said: “I was diagnosed with a rare type of cancer called sarcoma in February 2013 which came as a huge shock, not least because I’d never heard of sarcomas.

“But after surgery in March all seems to be going well and I’m feeling fighting fit again.

“I heard about Paralympian Richard Whitehead’s plan to run from John O’Groats to Lands End, and as there is the opportunity for others to run along with him I decided I had to take part.

“He is the Patron of Sarcoma UK so it seemed like a great chance to raise awareness, as well as money for the charity, and also for Scope.

“My future seemed so uncertain back in February, and even now, but I’ll turn 33 while I’m in running and cycling in Scotland, and I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate getting older and proving that I’m full of life.

“If anyone is interested in taking part too you can sign up for a 5k, 10K or marathon stage along the length of the country.”
