The rheumatology department at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary is holding a patient education evening on Thursday July 23 from 6:30pm to 8pm for people with Ankylosing Spondylitis and Axial Spondyloarthropathies.

These are auto-immune rheumatological conditions where inflammation of the spinal, pelvis and rib joints can cause pain, stiffness and disability.

The National Ankylosing Spondylitis Society (NASS) are supporting the event and refreshments are being supplied by local Lancaster business, J. Atkinson & Co.

The event will include talks from Dr Marwan Bukhari, Clinical Lead and Consultant Rheumatologist; Clare Longton, Advanced Physiotherapist Rheumatology and MSK; Lynda Fothergill, Research Nurse; and Laura Richards, NASS Branch Development Officer.

Dr Marwan Bukhari, Clinical Lead and Consultant Rheumatologist, said: “The aim of our event is to update patients on the condition and the latest information of treatment strategies including drug management and physiotherapy and help promote research opportunities within the trust.”

Clare Longton, Advanced Physiotherapist, said: “We hope that the event will produce enough interest to move forward with setting up a local NASS Patient Support branch in Lancaster in order to keep promoting healthy living with Ankylosing Spondylitis.”

Those interested in attending the event should contact Clare Longton on 01524 583361 or via email on landmasgroup@gmail.com.

The event will be held in Day Hospital in Medical Unit 2 at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary.
