RATS were spotted feasting on fast food outside a motorway service station – by a leading public health boss.

Prof John Ashton, director of public health for Cumbria, had parked up for a break around 20 feet from the entrance to the southbound Lancaster Services near Forton.

“A massive rat came out of the hedge near the carriageway and went into the bin,” he said.

“It came out with a big piece of food and then sat on the fence eating it. Four other rats then came out and did the same thing.”

Prof Ashton, who lives in Dent, North Yorkshire, and also chairs the UK Public Health Association, said: “It’s a concern because you have families with children using the services.”
