PLANS for 200 new homes in Carnforth have narrowly been passed by city councillors, despite Lancaster City Council’s inability to find a suitable site for a new canal footbridge linking the development to the town centre.
The Redrow Homes scheme at Lundsfield Quarries, off Kellet Road, was originally approved by the council’s planning committee in April 2008 on the understanding that the bridge would be provided.
But today, the committee were asked to approve the application without a bridge after hearing that an exhaustive investigation into seven possible locations for the structure had proved fruitless, with all being ruled out for different reasons.
The committee passed the application on a 9-6 vote, despite concerns over increased congestion and the possible risk of school children crossing the canal at Kellet Road being involved in an accident.
