North Lancashire motorists are facing long delays on the M6 tonight after four vehicles were involved in a collision near Carnforth.

The crash happened just after junction 35 on the northbound carriageway, blocking all three lanes.

On its website, the Highways Agency described the accident as serious.

Traffic was at a standstill and backed up to junction 33 at Lancaster South with knock-on delays of up to 90 minutes.

Some of those caught in the chaos said some drivers were passing the scene using the hard shoulder.

It’s thought the road will be closed until around 6.45pm, although one lane was reported to have re-opened at around 6.10pm.

Drivers are asked to use alternative routes if possible.
