Firefighters are still at the scene of a fire at a block of flats in Lancaster which broke out early this morning.
The fire is believed to have started in an annexe at a building under renovation for student flats on St Leonardgate at 2.20am.
Nearby residents had to be evacuated as the blaze took hold.
John Taylor, from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said: “This was quite a significant fire which broke out in an annexe at the back of the building.
“Firefighters still at the scene are in the final phases, checking round for residual embers using thermal imaging cameras.
“An investigation into how the fire started will have commenced.
“They will be looking for forensic clues in the debris and also interviewing passersby or neighbours asking for any information.
“Its too early to say how the fire started but they managed to contain it to the annexe.
“People living locally were evacuated for some time and there is substantial damage.”
The flats were unoccupied at the time and there were no reports of any injuries.
The road was closed for some time but reopened around 7.45am.
