Twins Appeal’s on a roll

Katie and Emma Sutcliffe recently celebrated their 16th birthdays.

Katie and Emma Sutcliffe recently celebrated their 16th birthdays.

An evening of rock ‘n’ roll aims to raise money to help disabled Lancaster twins Katie and Emma Sutcliffe this weekend.

The 16-year-olds suffer from spastic diplegic cerebral palsy and need wheelchairs to get about.

Backed by the Guardian, the twins are aiming to raise £85,000 to pay for life-changing treatment in America which could see them walk unaided for the first time. They have so far raised more than £75,000.

The rock ‘n’ roll night will include live music from Eddie Robbins and the Sunbeams and is being held tomorrow, Friday, from 7pm at Lancaster Railway Club. Tickets are £6 each from Stuart on 07853 238705 or from the club.

Meanwhile, many Lancaster University employees and students have pledged their support for the appeal.

At 4pm on February 8, students Ron Todd and Arthur Haynes kick off a 24-hour charity radio broadcast, live on student radio station 87.7 Bailrigg FM.

With special guests, including the girls themselves, alongside quizzes, games and a variety of great music, Ron and Arthur are trying to raise as much support and money for the twins as possible.

Postgraduate student Helen Davies, from the Department of English and Creative Writing where the twins’ mum Caroline works, is doing the Chester Half-Marathon in May in aid of the Twins Appeal.

If people would like to donate they can do so at http://www.justgiving.com/helen-davies16.

Caroline said: “We are very grateful to Helen for doing this for us.”

And Andy Tate, a work colleague of Caroline’s, and a group of his friends are in training to swim the length of the English Channel in support of the appeal.

Andy, Nigel Capewell, Ben Rickhuss, David Powers and Ben Griffin are aiming to complete 21 miles – 1,352 lengths – between them in 14 hours at the university leisure centre on February 21.

Each member of the team will be swimming a little more than four miles each in separate stints between 8am and 10pm. In order to complete the distance, the team needs to swim 98 lengths per hour.

Go to the twins’ Just Giving website at http://www.justgiving.com/thetwinsappeal site to make a donation.

Caroline said: “This is a mammoth challenge and I am very grateful that Andy and his friends are making such a huge effort for the girls.

“I also want to say a big thank you to all those people who have donated online at the appeal’s Just Giving site, and to all those people who have send donations through the post.”

Ripley St Thomas CE Academy ha also donated £200 from their charity fund to the appeal.

Caroline said: “I want to say a big thank you to Ripley for their support and to Megan Sutcliffe, Katie and Emma’s cousin, who attends Ripley.”
