The mother, father, daughter and their dog, from Bolton, had to call 999 after becoming trapped in the mud close to Throbshaw Point, Heysham on Monday afternoon.

In a statement to Morecambe’s RNLI crew, the family said: “I would like to send a huge thank you for coming to the assistance of my family and I on the sands at Heysham.

“I would also like once again to apologise for getting caught out how we did causing you guys to spring into action.

“Every single member of Morecambe Hovercraft, the ground crew, and also the 999 operator were absolute consummate professionals in everything they did.

“I have nothing but respect for all you guys and I intend to raise funds to help repay out debt to you.

“Stay safe and keep doing what you guys do best. Thank you all very, very much.”

The RNLI hovercraft crew used specialist mud rescue equipment to release the family members whilst at the same time reassuring them that they would soon be safe.

Once they were rescued they were taken to shore on the hovercraft to safety. They did not need any medical attention.

On the same day at 6.14pm, Morecambe’s RNLI hovercraft was launched to help three people on a sandbank near Bolton-le-Sands. It turned out to be a false alarm.
