Lively Lavelle mixes up a DJ thriller at library

James Lavelle - by Sarah Christian

James Lavelle most definitely rocked Lancaster library on Sunday night with a house music-led DJ set that incorporated plenty of his trademark sounds.

Following a lively, clever and eclectic support slot from Lancaster DJ Ginny Koppenhol to get the 100 plus members of the audience in the mood, Lavelle took to the decks wearing a beanie hat and clutching a bottle of Champagne.

After a shaky first mix, the UNKLE frontman settled into a stylish set that soon revealed the reworks, collabora-tions and remixes that he is well renowned for.

Initially, I wasn’t sure whether his remix of The Fear by The Doves was helped or hindered by an acapella of Daft Punk’s Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger, but it came together well in the end.

The voice of Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme echoed in and out of a stomping house track, shortly followed by UNKLE and Ian Brown’s rocky breaks-fuelled song Reign.

Lavelle’s two-hour set was peppered with sounds and snippets of vocals familiar to fans of his music, and there were a lot of people commenting on how great it was to see this particular musician, not only in a library, but in a library in Lancaster.

And yet again, the Get It Loud in Libraries team proved that it could host a party, albeit relatively early on a Sunday night, with a world-renowned DJ in comfortable and well-furnished surroundings that made the experience one to remember.

It wasn't just the standard Unkle mix of Fear, but it was definitely Fear.

He played a remix (That I've not heard before) of Ian Brown, The Fear with the Daft Punk Acapella, not his remix of There Goes the Fear, by The Doves. Are you sure he played the Doves track as I'm a bit confused now.
