Juggler brings gravity of science home to pupils
Juggling, unicycles and the ‘magic’ of i-Phones all kept an audience of more than 400 pupils on the edge of their seats as science took centre stage at The Dukes in Lancaster.
Two performers – Matt Storey and James Soper – took pupils from seven of the area’s secondary schools through some scintillating science and magical maths as part of an event supported by Heysham Power Stations.
Alan Oulton, station director at Heysham 2 power station, opened the morning and the afternoon events.
“The two guys were superb and really engaged the audience with some very interesting maths and science theories,” he said.
“The idea behind the event was to show pupils how science is behind all we do, from how phones use simple spreadsheets to take photos and a Sudoku grid of numbers to send texts. I hope that those at the show will be inspired and may see that they too could have future using science, technology or maths skills.”
Seven schools attended the event including Heysham, Morecambe, Carnforth, Our Lady’s, the two grammar schools and Ripley St Thomas.
The show was part of an outreach programme run by Cheltenham Science Festival, which is sponsored by EDF Energy, which runs Heysham power stations.
The Dukes director, Joe Sumsion said: “The Dukes was delighted to work with EDF in this way.
“Thanks to the science event and two performances of our own production of Treasure Island, there was a great atmosphere and we welcomed around 1,000 young people into the building in one day which must be a record for The Dukes.”
