Janette’s work on show at the Atrium Gallery

An exhibition on display in the Atrium Gallery at Lancaster University has been inspired by disused quarries in the district.

Underground Exposed is an exhibition of paintings by Ellel resident Janette Ireland, who has been a pebble mosaic artist and designer for 15 years.

After living in Ireland for a couple of years, Janette turned her attention to painting Irish cottages and their histories.

On returning to Ellel, Janette has refurbished her studio, and painted nine story pictures, each one taking a building in the area where below the ground level you find a myriad of historical facts and myths woven into colourful patterns.

Some of the buildings explored include The City Museum, Ashton Memorial, 1 Golgotha Village and Bailrigg House.

Janette is also showing one painting based upon the patterns in the mud of the River Lune under Skerton Bridge. Janette fell through the balustrades on Skerton Bridge when she was two, and was rescued by her mum, who ruined her stockings.

The exhibition is at the Atrium Gallery in the Lancaster Environment Centre until December 17.

There is free entry during office hours.Private viewing can be arranged for evenings or weekends on 01524 752487.
