If you fancy heading out on New Year’s Eve to enjoy some live music, look no further than the city of Lancaster to bring in 2013 on a musical high note.
Lancaster Speakeasy’s New Year’s Eve party is bursting at the seams with live music and DJs, glitz and “showgirl-clad glitter fuelled antics”, bringing together the vintage and the ultra modern.
Dutty Moonshine (“the sounds of the 1930’s big band meets modern basslines and chunky beats”) headlines the event which takes over both the upstairs and downstairs area of The Dalton Rooms, with an entry price of just £5.
Lancaster Speakeasy’s gigs this year have included performances by The Correspondents, Sound Assembly, Mr B The Gentleman Rhymer, Kitten and the Hip, Cut la Roc, Grinny Grandad and Jinx in Dub.
The New Year’s Eve gig also features Lancaster electro swing band Sound Assembly, and DJs Madame Electrifie, Jinx in Dub, Odylic Force, The Telescopic Process, DJ Donald, Strictly Business, Jah-Vis, DJ Matt, Roc Vicar and Richie Rucksack.
Also to contend with is the Jambeater Soundsystem and FAF Arts and The Wonder Bar featuring the Charleston Grinderz and Showgurls.
Lancaster’s Mis-Shapes Indie Night takes over the Park Hotel on New Year’s Eve with live music from Sootytern, below, and Icepops for Breakfast, and an indie disco until 3am on January 1.
Sootytern’s second EP Who does not know famous Swan was released on October 28, and the track Grasvegas was recently play on BBC Introducing...on Radio Lancashire.
The event starts at 8pm, the bands start at 9pm and DJs play from 11pm.
Tickets are £6.
And if you fancy the proverbial drink in a brewery, Lancaster Brewery is having a New Year’s Eve party, with live music from the Groove Cutters, plus DJs, and a £45 entrance fee that covers bitter, lager, cider, ale, stout, soft drinks and a pie and peas supper. The event is ticket only – to book call 01524 848537 or email email@example.com.
Alternatively, tickets can be collected from The Sun Hotel and Bar every Wednesday and Thursday.
At The Robert Gillow and Lord Ashton there will be live music from 8pm until 1am on New Year’s Eve, with a selection of acts performing jazz, blues, rock and roll and more. You can check out www.robertgillow.com for updates on the line up, and the both pubs are expected to be open 24 hours.
Also on New Year’s Eve, Ottersgear perform at The Golden Lion, and Smokey O’Connors in Morecambe hosts The Bottlenecks – which will be the band’s last ever performance prior to the pursuance of solo projects.
Meanwhile, on Sunday night, The Yorkshire House in Parliament Street will be serving up a feast of festive fun with music from Carpe, Marble Oscar, Stalked by Scarlet and Cry Baby Aeroplanes.
Carpe will be carving up succulent hip-hop/funk stuffed with blues, rock and soul, and the band’s debut album Risk It All, will also be available for the first time on the night.
The album has been recorded by the band and local engineer Matt Middleton and brings together three years of writing and performing. Doors open at 8pm and entry is £4.
Next Friday at The Bobbin, Mixtapes and Cupcakes presents Songs from the TV shows, from 9pm, and next Saturday night, Icepops for Breakfast, The Art Club and Two For Joy perform at a free gig at The Yorkshire House, from 8pm.
Next week, read my music review of the year, and I’ll be counting down my top five Lancaster gigs of 2012 too.
