Going gaga for the first lady of folk
Jesca Hoop plays the Yorkshire House
The “Lady Gaga of freak folk” comes to the Yorkshire House in Lancaster next month.
Californian-born Manchester resident Jesca Hoop, who supported Eels last year, as well as doing a tour and duet with Peter Gabriel, has been compared to Bjork, Kate Bush and Joni Mitchell, and was given the slightly dubious aforementioned title by the Independent.
The BBC 6Music favourite, who is currently in Los Angeles putting the finishing touches to her next full-length studio album, due out in 2012, plays an intimate show at The Yorkshire House in Parliament Street on February 10.
The gig has been organised by new Lancaster promoters ECP – Marc Nellis and Alastair McPhail – who aim to bring more great acts to the Yorkie over the coming months.
“Jesca Hoop’s music is like a four-sided coin,” said musician Tom Waits, who once employed her as his nanny and encouraged her into the music world.
“She is an old soul, like a black pearl, a good witch or red moon.
“Her music is like going swimming in a lake at night,” he added.
Hoop also performs at the Cornerhouse in Manchester on February 4, and House Concerts in York on February 11.
