Festive films at Dukes this Christmas

The Dukes cinema is going Christmas crackers this festive season.

Films enjoyed for generations at this time of year hit the big screen at the Lancaster cinema later this month.

And the festivities begin with that most Christmassy of ballets – The Nutcracker on December 16.

A recorded screening of the Bolshoi Ballet’s version of this two act ballet features Tchaikovsky’s enchanting score and tells the story of Marie as she watches her toys miraculously come to life one Christmas. Tickets for this 4pm screening are £12/£11 concessions.

Other festive favourites lined up are Gremlins(15) on December 21; The Muppet Christmas Carol(U) on December 21 and 22; Die Hard(18) on December 22 and It’s A Wonderful Life(U) on December 24.

Young Billy takes possession of his cuddly new pet at Christmas and gets a whole lot more than he bargained for in Gremlins, the black comedy which first gripped audiences in the Eighties.

Another popular film from that decade is The Muppet Christmas Carol which combines Dickens classic tale, Jim Henson’s Muppets, a host of catchy songs and Michael Caine as Scrooge.

Die Hard, also released in 1980, is a festive film with a difference. It’s set at a Christmas party that none of the guests will forget when they are taken hostage as part of a huge robbery plan. Bruce Willis as New York cop John McClane takes on the terrorists single-handedly.

The perfect film for Christmas Eve - It’s A Wonderful Life - is an enduring seasonal classic starring James Stewart who, when contemplating suicide, is shown by an apprentice angel what life would have been like had he not lived.

Tickets for Gremlins, The Muppet Christmas Carol, Die Hard and It’s A Wonderful Life are priced £5.50(£4.50 concessions).
