Experience Baroque charm of Music Room

editorial image

Visitors will be able to glimpse behind the doors of an 18th century Lancaster building for one day only when it opens to the public after a restoration.

Building preservation charity the Landmark Trust is opening The Music Room, in Sun Street Square, on Saturday, March 16 between 10am and 4pm.

People will have the chance to see the recently restored Baroque plasterwork featuring the Nine Muses, enjoy live music and refreshments from the Pop-Up Café, provided by J.Atkinson & Co Coffee Roasters.

The Landmark Trust takes on historic places in danger and carefully and sensitively restores them.

By making them available for holidays, the buildings can be enjoyed by all, both today and for future generations.

The building dates from 1739, and was acquired by the Landmark Trust in 1973; they completed restoration in 1977.

During original restoration the plasterwork of the Music Room itself took 6,000 hours of work to repair.

It was visited by the Queen in her role as Duke of Lancaster at the start of her Silver Jubilee tour of England.

It is an exceptional Baroque interior, where you can now sleep as well as play the piano.

On the walls are the Muses: eloquence, history, music, astronomy, tragedy, rhetoric, dancing, comedy and amorous poetry; with Apollo over the fireplace. A fruitful goddess with a torch presides over the ceiling.

One Muse had vanished entirely and was recreated by the plasterers from Sutton Coldfield as a modern girl, big and busty, with a cheerful eye.

After the open day The Music Room will return to self-catering holiday accommodation.

The Music Room sleeps up to four people, and enjoys distant views over Lancaster.

The holiday rental income pays for the building’s on-going maintenance.

Admission on the open day is free and leaflets are provided detailing the building’s history.

For more information, contact the booking office, which is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 6pm and Saturday from 10am to 4pm.
