Big names back at Morecambe

Roddy Woomble.

Roddy Woomble.

Roddy Woomble is the first big name solo artist to perform at Morecambe’s newest live music venue.

The celebrated solo songwriter and performer, familiar to thousands of music fans as the front man of Scottish rock band Idlewild, will play The Hothouse on November 22 from 8pm.

Roddy will perform songs from his folk-influenced solo albums, supported by The Lakeland Fiddlers and Bill Lloyd.

Roddy made his name with Idlewild who have released seven acclaimed albums and three compilations to date, plus 12 UK top 40 singles.

At the height of their success, they toured the world as headliners, as well as supporting REM, U2 and The Rolling Stones among others.

In 2006 Roddy released his debut solo album My Secret is my Silence which featured many top names from the folk scene and spent several weeks at the top of the UK folk charts. It was followed last year by The Impossible Song & Other Songs and an extensive UK tour.

In Morecambe, Roddy will be joined on stage by Cumbrian banjo player Bill Lloyd and The Lakeland Fiddlers.

Bill, also known as Banjo Billy, is well known as a live performer in Cumbria, the Borders and North West England both as a soloist and with The
Wildwood Band.

His material ranges from old-time Appalachian dance music and songs to traditional Irish ballads, country rock, bluegrass, traditional European dance music and his own songs.

The Roddy Woomble gig is a highlight of a new series of musical events – More Music Presents – featuring a headline set from nationally acclaimed artists with support and collaborations from community bands and local musicians.

Tickets for the November 22 gig are priced £10 (£6 conc).
