Galgate’s England Indoor Bowls international has presented a cheque for £750 to St John’s Hopsice.

Janice Gower and Richard Maddieson, CEO of the World Bowls Tour, raised the money, which will go towards The Visitor and Lancaster Guardian’s Save Our Hospice appeal, during a charity match at this year’s World Indoor Bowls Championship in January.

In a hastily arranged contest to fill a gap in the schedule Janice and Australia’s ‘Queen of Bowls’ Karen Murphy beat two of the best men in the world, Paul Foster MBE and Alex Marshall MBE.

Each team was awarded a cheque for £500, and the total was then upped thanks to a collection in the crowd.

When asked to name a charity, Janice thought of the Slyne Road hospice following the death of her father’s bowls captain Bill Atkinson.
