A GROUP of Lancaster schoolgirls have met one of the world’s best-selling children’s authors after winning a top literary competition.

Eight pupils from Lancaster Girls’ Grammar School enjoyed a meet and greet with Jacqueline Wilson at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN) last week.

The 12 to 14-year-olds were among 25 winners who entered the writing, illustration and journalism categories as part of the first ever Jacqueline Wilson Literary Festival at UCLan. All three classes proved to be immensely popular with more than 9,000 entries from around the world.

Ellie Gresty, 13, a winner in the short story category, said: “It was great meeting Jacqueline Wilson as I love all her books.”

The competition was part of a two-day event where more than 500 9-16-year-olds visited the university to meet the creator of the Tracy Beaker books, which have also been made into a BBC TV series.
