COUNCILLORS have defied Lancaster University by nominating a student to represent them on the university council.
University student Paul Aitchison was elected to Lancaster City Council to represent its University ward in May.
The following month he was nominated as the council’s representative on the Lancaster University Council, the institution’s governing body.
But university bosses attempted to overturn the appointment. A council report says the university sent a letter saying the nomination was invalid because representatives must be lay people – not students or university staff.
The council has examined the university’s rules but found no requirement for its representative to be a lay person. The university’s website also lists its representative separately from lay members.
