Old boy wins young scientist prize

Former Lancaster Royal Grammar School pupil John Atkinson has been awarded the Young Scientist Investigator of the year Award 2012.

John, 24, was born and lived in Lancaster until he left for university. He had previously attended Scotforth Primary School.

He left LRGS in 2005 to pursue a degree in microbiology at the University of Sheffield and graduated in 2008, progressing to study for a PhD in nephrology.

He has now secured a post doctorate position with the university in partnership with the Hallamshire hospital.

John, a PhD student within the academic unit of nephrology, was awarded the Young Scientist Investigator Award at the recent United Kingdom Renal Association meeting.

John has also published several short stories in the horror genre that are now available via bookshops and the internet.
