Former Settle College principal William Bancroft has taken over at the helm at Dallam School.

Living in Lancaster, and originally from Sheffield, this post is Mr Bancroft’s third headship.

He replaces Steve Holdup, who retired and moved to France at the end of the summer term.

Following a history degree at York University, and a period as a chartered accountant, he began his teaching career in Surrey.

He then went on to work in Lancashire and latterly North Yorkshire.

He has also worked with the National College for School Leadership on school improvement as well as training programmes for senior leaders and governors.

“I am delighted to be joining Dallam,” said Mr Bancroft.

“It is an excellent school with a strong and committed body of students and staff.

“The additional aspects of boarding, community education and the superb sports facilities make this a very different type of school.”

In a letter to all parents Mr Bancroft said: “I am very excited about the opportunity to lead Dallam through the next phase of its development.

“The school has undergone enormous change in the last decade with the siting of all teaching on the Milnthorpe site, a considerable programme of building and renovation, the enlargement of boarding at Heversham and the introduction of the International Baccalaureate to sit alongside A-level qualifications in the Sixth Form.

“All of this plus the superb sports facilities, outdoor and community education and the adventure learning programme make Dallam an exceptional school where, I believe, the opportunities for young people are second to none.

“I am committed to two key principles: excellence and inclusion.

“I expect to lead a school where we create the best possible opportunities (both curricular and extra-curricular) for our students to ensure that each one, regardless of ability or background has the chance to shine, to aspire, to achieve, to be safe and to be happy.

“Over the coming months and years we will seek to consolidate the excellent work that has already taken place but also to build on those foundations to ensure that Dallam provides the very best it can for each and every student.

“I am looking forward to meeting and working with you all.”

Mr Bancroft was principal at Settle College for the last seven years. During that time he steered the college through a period of major upheaval with the reorganisation of education in north Craven.

Under his leadership the school moved from Ofsted judgements of barely satisfactory to good with many outstanding features.

In recent performance tables, Settle College is the third-most improved school in the Yorkshire region and in the top 200 of schools nationally.

It is recognised as one of the most improved schools in the country for 2012/13.
