Lovers of fresh seafood – and other culinary delights – are in for a treat at the newly re-opened Fenwick Arms at Claughton near Lancaster.
An award-winning pub group has taken over the historic inn and, following extensive refurbishment, it is looking better than ever.
I went along to the opening night to sample some of the dishes on the Seafood Pub Company’s extensive menu.
I was given a warm welcome and was delighted to see that the pub had been redecorated in light and fresh colours.
I’d describe the decor as country chic. Everything from the chairs to the soft furnishings had an air of quality.
Managing director Joycelyn Neve, gave everyone a warm welcome and explained that the emphasis is on fine locally sourced produce from the land and sea.
Joycelyn’s father, Chris Neve, has a Fleetwood-based fish business so ‘same day’ catches can be on the plate within hours.
I also spoke to executive chef Antony Shirley who has worked at Harvey Nichols in Knightsbridge and Raffles in the West Indies. He said they have some restaurant staples but the emphasis is on more interesting dishes – I’d certainly agree with him there. The creativity that had gone into every dish was impressive.
We sampled many of the dishes on the menu including: haddock goujons with bloody Mary ketchup, salt and pepper squid with rice wine and ginger dipping sauce; smoked venison carpaccio with blue cheese dressing, summer beets and apple; goats cheese crumpets with pear and endive salad with rosemary honey; smoked haddock with Indian bubble and squeak, friend egg, tomato and coriander dressing; barbecued Goosnargh chicken with spicy baked beans, guacamole and charred corn salsa and peppered tuna steak with creamed spinach. We also tried mini dishes from the dessert menu.
Where else do you get a choice like this in the local area? It was heavenly and I’ll definitely return for nights out.
