Police in Cumbria are taking part in a national awareness week in relation to uninsured drivers.

Nationally it is believed that there are approximately 1 million motorists who are driving without insurance.

Driving without insurance is illegal and police in Cumbria will be targeting and intercepting vehicles which are flagged up on the Motor Insurers’ Bureau’s database, which is able to list where vehicles are registered, and which ones are insured, as well as Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras.

If a vehicle is stopped and a driver cannot provide up-to-date motor insurance details, the vehicle will be seized and may be destroyed if insurance is not purchased within a set time limit. Drivers will also be prosecuted for driving without motor insurance. Driving whilst uninsured carries a penalty of six points on your licence, fine of £300 and a possible driving ban.
