A GRIEVING student has told how a Lancaster University coursemate shot dead on Boxing Day was “like an elder brother” to him.

Kushal Monga paid tribute to Anuj Bidve, 23, who was shot in an unprovoked incident on Ordsall Lane, Salford, at around 1.30am on December 26 after being approached by two men, one of whom asked him for the time.

Anuj, who had been walking from his hotel towards Manchester city centre with a group of eight Lancaster University students, replied but was then shot at close range. He was pronounced dead in hospital.

Kushal, 20, who studied micro-electronics alongside Anuj, said: “He was like an elder brother to me, he often advised me. He was extremely friendly – everyone knew him in the Indian community. He was very popular and career-focused and stayed out of trouble.

“He could relate to anyone, he loved watching and playing football.”
