A taxi driver from Carnforth has been arrested for an alleged sexual assault on one of his customers in Lancaster, police said.

The 41-year-old man is accused of touching the 19-year-old woman’s leg and breasts during the journey after picking her up from outside Elements nightclub on North Road in the city.

Officers said the incident is said to have taken place between 2.15am and 3.15am on September 28 and have appealed directly to a man who helped the alleged victim afterwards to contact police.

Lancashire Police released details of the incident today, Tuesday.

Officers said the taxi pulled up on Abbeystead Drive and, as the woman went to get out of the car, the driver hugged and kissed her.

On getting out of the car, the alleged victim approached a man who was passing and told him what had happened.

This man, possibly called James, said police, stayed with her for a while before he was joined by a female friend.

The pair then walked the woman home.

DC Michelle Stephens, of Lancashire Police, said: “Despite on-going enquiries, we have been unable to find this man and woman who helped the victim on the night and we are very keen to speak to them.

“I would appeal directly to those two people: if you see this appeal; please get in touch with us by calling 101 and quoting log number LC-20130928-0337.

“Similarly, if anyone has any other information that they think might help, they should also call 101 and quote that log number.”

Information can also be passed to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or online at Crimestoppers-uk.org.

The taxi driver was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and bailed until later this month.
