TRADING Standards are warning Lancaster residents to be alert after a new phone scam was brought to their attention in the district.

Pensioner Mary Dodd, who lives in Ashfield Avenue, was called last week by someone claiming to be representing the government.

It followed national news reports urging people to fight to reclaim unfair bank charges.

The 78-year-old was told she was due to be paid back £4,000 in bank charges.

However, Mrs Dodd was told the money was from charges made by Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) – where she doesn’t have an account – and she quickly realised the call was from scammers.

“I let them carry on talking to see what they said and was given a phone number and name to call in Goa,” Mrs Dodd said.

“I was then told to go to a paper shop in King Street to get an envelope to send them £250 which they would then deduct from the £4,000 they would send me.

“Fortunately I have seen things like this on TV and I suppose that’s what alerted me.”
