Jail sentence upheld for priest

The sentence of a Canon at Lancaster Cathedral who was jailed for 12 months for sexual offences will not be reviewed.

A request to refer the sentence of Stephen Shield to the Court of Appeal for review has been rejected by Solicitor General, Oliver Heald QC MP.

A spokesperson for the Attorney General said: “After careful consideration the Solicitor General, Oliver Heald QC MP has decided not to refer the sentence of Stephen Shield to the Court of Appeal as possibly unduly lenient as he does not think the Court would increase the sentence.”

Stephen Shield was jailed in December 2013 after being found guilty of three counts of sexual assault by a jury.
